Detroit Bike Racks

When designing bike racks for Bedrock to be placed at Detroit Ally Building and One Woodward Building, I considered the role that appropriately placed, high functioning bike racks have in urban place-making and what that can do to decrease Detroit a largely automotive city’s carbon footprint. I created bike racks that function appropriately for the end user and integrate into the surrounding architecture seamlessly. Our client stressed that the racks that they currently had were not functioning well bikes where spilling over and falling on the ground. Never designing bike racks I started by researching what is most important to support different types and scales of bikes. I developed an overarching strategy to ensure stability and to eliminate overcrowding. Bike racks are made of carbon powder-coated steel for longevity of life span with a mount system accessible through the base.

Detroit Ally Building Built in 1993, renowned architects John Burgee and Philip Johnson created one of the skyline’s most recognizable towers. Its Flemish-inspired neo-gothic spires make it the second tallest skyscraper in Detroit. In Spring 2016, it became the home of Ally Financial's new Michigan headquarters.

Nearby attractions include the Detroit Riverfront, Campus Martius Park, Greektown Casino Hotel, and is located on the QLINE streetcar route.

One Woodward was designed by renowned architect Minoru Yamasaki and built in 1962. Located on Jefferson and Woodward Avenues just across from Hart Plaza and the Detroit Riverfront this 29-story landmark office tower has 94 underground parking spaces and panoramic floor-to-ceiling views of Downtown, the Riverfront, and Windsor, Canada.
